I’ve spent many months praying for guidance on decisions in my life: where God wants me and my family to be, and what jobs I should be going into where I can make a difference.

Along with this the news is full of stories of financial chaos. Nothing seems guaranteed anymore or free from uncertainty - homes, schools, income, financial commitments, all seem a bigger worry than ever before. Making my decisions have come with feelings of fear of a collapse in anything I might invest my money, time and effort in. Will we have enough to cope if we stretch ourselves or should we just take the easy route?

It’s made it harder to work out where I should go and what I should be doing and the consequences of hearing God wrong.

So this morning as I have been going through my regular praying and fasting morning that I mark each month in the diary just to be with the Lord and seek some together time with him, these verses came to me from Psalm 37:

16. Better the little that the righteous have then the wealth of many wicked; for the power of the wicked will be broken. But the Lord upholds the righteous.

18.The days of the blameless are known to the Lord, and their inheritance will endure forever. In times of disaster they will not wither; in days of famine they will enjoy plenty.

God promises us that the little we have will be more of a blessing to us than the wealth of those that don’t know him. He then goes on to promise us that he knows every one of our days ahead, that what he has promised will endure and in times of trouble he will support us so that we don’t fade.

Earlier on this Psalm has one of the classic lines of the Bible:

Psalm 37:4 says: Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Today I thought I’d get some encouragement from an interview with Roland Baker who has an amazing walk with the Lord with his wife Heidi out in Mozambique. This is what he said on hearing form the Lord on what we should be doing:

‘Our primary responsibility is not to set out a plan for how to be most effective and fruitful , but to delight in our Saviour, to seek for him and be thrilled with him. In response he will give you things to do that fulfil you and make use of your life more than you can make use of it yourself and bring fruit. So spend your effort in getting to know him and as you do so he will reveal himself to you and give you good things to do. Your job is to take pleasure in him and be free from even the stress of working out what you have to do, lean on him, trust in him with all your heart, not your understanding. He knows how to communicate with you and he is capable of sending you where he wants. Let him decide, he is fully capable of communicating and steering you. He is able to take us and make very fruitful use of our lives more than us brainstorming for hours.'

So that's all, we just love him and adore him, and know that he's got everything under control. He's got our best interests at heart.
